I don't know about you but I am having a difficult time with the price increases in everything.
This past month I sunk $85 into a gauge/alarm for my fuel oil tank as I learned they would not deliver due to some new law. My husband installed it himself to save money.
We also had to get a new cap for the darn tank as it was flat and screwed in we were told water was seeping in. That was another $60. This was a new tank bought in 2003 btw. We were also told to keep our tank filled due to condensation.
We can't afford kero at near $4 a gallon. We have been making trips to the gas station with every paycheck and spend $60-$75 which really doesn't fill the tank at all in our cold region as it's being used all the time.
I seriously wonder how people who are on fixed incomes can make it? I hear the same things from most of my friends. The middle class is disappearing, they can't pay for their food, medical, and just basic necessities.
I wonder how this little money that Bush is working on will help the economy? It's gonna go right in my oil tank. What will be left over? I suppose will go to my mounting credit card bills.

Whole Foods Phasing Out Plastic Grocery Bags
I am very pleased with Whole Foods Market for phasing out plastic bags by Earth Day which is in April. My nearest location is 50 miles away and I have never been to their store. I do get their e-newsletter though. If gas prices were cheaper I would make that trip. I have always wanted to go there.
We do have a Giant Food Store and I hope they eventually go the same way as Whole Foods.

How to Recycle Your Used Electronics
The Consumer Electronics Association, which represents electronics manufacturers, encourages people to recycle their e-waste, and has set up a handy Website to make the process simple. Log on to mygreenelectronics.org, where you can search for local recycling drop-off points by zip code and product category. You'll also find tips and info on electronics recycling, and a cool energy calculator that will show you how much juice each product uses.

Giant Food Stores Offers Eco-Friendly Products
Today I was pleased to find more eco-friendly products at my local Giant food store.
I saw cleaning and laundry products from Method and Seventh Generation which were new. I also picked up Bon Ami there also.
In the personal care section I found some new toothpastes such as Jason and Dr Ken's brands. I also saw my current selection by Kiss My Face.
What's really nice about Giant's website is they have a shopping list that you can go through their weekly circular online and print out your list. I use that frequently. They also offer recipes and internet coupons.
Hope you all had a nice holiday and here's wishing you all a happy new year.

Sunday Circulars Get Rid of the Staples, Please
What's on sale this week? Easy to find out in your Sunday newspaper ads.
But what a pain in the butt some of them are to recycle. There are only a few companies that add staples to their circulars every week. I ask the question is this really necessary? Surely it adds to the cost of producing the weekly circulars. Maybe I am just not getting the point. But many other companies don't bind their pages together in this way.
I have to get out my little tool from the drawer to remove the 2-3 staples before putting them into the bin.
I think companies could do a bit more to help the consumer recycle in such simple ways as this. Just my 2 cents.

Eco-Friendly Dishwashing Products
I recently tried two brands of dishwashing detergents (powdered). One was by Seventh Generation. The other was by Citra-Solv,LLC.
How did they compare? This may depend on the type of water you have. I have hard well water.
The Citra Solv brand called Citra-Dish performed very well for me. It was comparable to my previous brand which happened to be Cascade.
The Seventh Generation brand I had read primarily good reviews with some people who mentioned it left sprinkles on dishes that did not dissolve. I happened to be one of those people. Again, I suspect it has to do with the type of water you have.
Green Guide lists a number of dishwashing detergent brands and companies with ratings and articles.
Enjoy!

Eco Toilet Cleaners
Corrosive ingredients in conventional toilet bowl cleaners, such as hydrochloric, sulfuric acid, and lye can cause severe burns if splashed in eyes and on skin, and some ingredients, like ammonia, threaten aquatic populations when flushed. Below is a list of toilet bowl cleaners that are safer for human health and the environment.
http://www.thegreenguide.com/products/Housekeeping/Toilet_Bowl_Cleaners
There were 3 top ranking cleaners. Borax which is boric acid and a long time cleaner on the market.
Another high ranking toilet cleaner was Heinz white distilled vinegar which I have used before and must agree that it works on tough stains.
The other was Sound Earth Fizzn' Floor Booster Floor & Toilet Bowl Cleaner.
I recently purchased the Ecover brand which was highly rated by Drugstore.com users. But have been looking for a suitable toilet bowl brush that won't scratch the inner bowl. Anyone know of a good one?
